Spend a week living in Graaff Reinet, a charming town surrounded by mountains and the wide open landscapes of the Great Karoo.
This programme offers a different way to experience South Africa. You’ll settle into the slower pace of life in a small Karoo town, get to know the community and experience everyday life beyond the usual tourist routes.
You’ll volunteer at community projects, help with youth football and explore the beautiful surroundings. It’s a chance to discover a lesser known side of South Africa, meet local people and experience what makes the Karoo special.
THE LOCAL EXPERIENCE
Throughout the week, you’ll be guided by our local partners and experience their love for this beautiful town, the surrounding nature and the local football club. Their connection to the community lets you experience life in the Karoo from a local perspective.
You’ll get involved in community initiatives, which may include helping at a soup kitchen, painting charity facilities or community cleanups. You’ll also support a junior football club, working with children aged 7 to 12.
There’s time to explore the beautiful Karoo landscapes, discover local traditions and enjoy experiences such as a traditional South African braai.
Accommodation
YOUR HOME IN GRAAFF-REINET
You’ll stay at Hartland Huis, a welcoming guesthouse in the heart of Graaff Reinet. Accommodation is in single or twin rooms, giving you a comfortable place to relax after a day of activities.
Located in town, your accommodation is a convenient base for exploring the surroundings and experiencing everyday life in the Karoo. Local shops, cafés and a grocery store are all within walking distance.
Breakfast and most lunches and dinners are included throughout your stay. You’ll also enjoy a traditional
South African braai cooking experience and a home cooked farewell dinner.
Your free time is yours to enjoy! Explore the historic streets, visit local shops and cafés or simply relax at the guesthouse. Our local partners are nearby to offer support throughout your stay.
